Eva Buchmann
stage director
www.evabuchmann.com
After her production of Haydn's wanderlust pharmacy opera Lo speziale in a small Fiat Cinquecento, which transports itself as a stage set, as well as Ludmilla, an opera persiflage by Erich Ziegler from the Westerbork transit camp, she now devotes herself to Beethoven's Fidelio, which will also be recorded with the Tonhalle Orchestra under Paavo Järvi.
With experience at major stages such as the Stanislavski Theatre in Moscow, Eva Buchmann has now set herself the task of opening up new spaces. Cleverly reduced to the essentials, she unfolds great operatic magic in factories, palaces, hotels and warehouses with small-form productions in Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and the USA and at festivals in Carmel, Malta, St. Moritz, Leipzig or Amsterdam.
Buchmann's small-scale productions showcase the possibilities of the imagination worldwide: Ludmilla can be experienced in the Netherlands in 2023, and there is this production in Dallas in 2024. Haydn's wanderlusting apothecary, together with the travelling stage in a Fiat 500, will travel to Trondheim in March 2023, having already impressed in Zurich and Frankfurt, among others, musically directed by Jan Willem de Vriend.
The Swiss studied cello at the Winterthur Conservatory, and then psychology and music therapy in the Netherlands. In addition to her musical activities, she worked for several years as a music therapist in a child psychiatric clinic in Amsterdam. As a director she made her debut with a semi-staged production of Die Fledermaus in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, numerous invitations from home and abroad followed, such as to the Theatr Wielki in Łódź, to the Stanislawski Theatre in Moscow, to the Haus für Mozart in Salzburg, to the Opera in Krakow, to the Theater Carré in Amsterdam and Opera St. Moritz/Switzerland.
Her repertoire includes many operas from the 17th/18th centuries, but also Verdi, Donizetti, Mascagni, Stravinsky and Frid. Other productions in 18/19 and 19/20: Handel's Alcina (Nikkikai Opera Tokyo, Japan) Handel's Semele (Theatr Wielki Łódź, Poland) Schauspieldirektor/Mozart, Schneekönigin/Hefti both for the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Mozart's Nozze di Figaro/Mozart (Piccolo Festival d' Udine, Italy and State Theatre Rijeka, Croatia).
Since 2018 she has been working as a guest lecturer at the Music Academy in Łódź (Poland).
